My Safe Florida Home in 2026: Could You Qualify for Up to $10,000 in Hurricane Mitigation Grants?

Florida homeowners spend a lot of time thinking about hurricane insurance. But there is another question worth asking:

Could the State of Florida help pay to make your home stronger before the next storm?

Through the My Safe Florida Home Program (MSFH), eligible homeowners can receive a free wind-mitigation inspection and may qualify for financial assistance of up to $10,000 for approved hurricane-resistance improvements.

As of August 2026, the program is accepting applications, although grants remain subject to available funding and legislative appropriations (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

For homeowners who qualify, the program can help strengthen their property while potentially creating opportunities for additional insurance discounts.

At The Beacon Insurance Agency, we believe both sides matter: protecting the home itself and understanding how those improvements may affect your homeowners insurance.

What is My Safe Florida Home?

My Safe Florida Home is administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services and is designed to help eligible homeowners improve their homes’ resistance to hurricane damage.

The process normally starts with a free wind-mitigation inspection. The inspection evaluates existing hurricane-resistant features, identifies recommended improvements, and provides information that homeowners can also share with their insurance company (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

One important distinction: qualifying for the inspection does not automatically mean you qualify for a grant.

Who may qualify for a grant?

Under Florida’s current 2026 statute, grant applicants must first qualify for the inspection program and have received their initial MSFH inspection within the previous 24 months.

For grant eligibility, the home must generally:

✓ Have an insured value of $700,000 or less

✓ Have been built before January 1, 2008

✓ Be an eligible owner-occupied property with a homestead exemption

✓ Belong to an applicant who meets the program’s current low- or moderate-income requirements

The homeowner must also make the property available for a final inspection once the approved work is completed (Florida Legislature, 2026).

Current inspection eligibility can include detached single-family homes as well as certain attached single-family properties of up to three stories.

How does the $10,000 grant work?

For an eligible Matching Grant, Florida contributes $2 for every $1 contributed by the homeowner, up to a maximum state contribution of $10,000.

For example, if an approved project costs $15,000, the state contribution could reach $10,000 while the homeowner contributes $5,000.

Matching Grants operate on a reimbursement basis. Eligible low-income applicants, however, may receive up to $10,000 without providing the matching contribution (Florida Legislature, 2026; My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

The important word is up to. A $10,000 payment is not guaranteed. The amount depends on eligibility, approved improvements, project costs, and available program funding.

What improvements can the grant cover?

This is not a general home-renovation grant.

The work must be recommended in the homeowner’s Initial Inspection Report and later verified through the program’s Final Inspection.

Eligible categories currently include opening protection for qualifying windows, exterior doors, garage doors and skylights, as well as roof-to-wall connections, roof-deck attachments and secondary water resistance. Current Florida law also allows roof-covering replacement when it is part of an approved secondary water-resistance improvement (Florida Legislature, 2026; My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

That is why homeowners should begin with the inspection rather than choosing a project first.

One mistake you should avoid

Do not start the project before your grant application is approved.

The official program specifically warns that mitigation projects completed before grant approval will be denied funding (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

In other words, do not replace your windows or begin qualifying roof work assuming that the program will reimburse you afterward.

Follow the approval process first.

Could the improvements lower your insurance premium?

Possibly.

After receiving the Initial Inspection Report, homeowners are encouraged to share it with their insurance company. The report may identify existing wind-mitigation features that qualify for discounts.

If grant-funded improvements are later completed, the homeowner should also submit the Final Inspection Report to the insurer so the company can determine whether additional discounts apply (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

The program actually requires homeowners completing the grant process to show that the Final Inspection Report was submitted to their insurer. However, receiving an insurance discount is not required to receive the grant payment (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

That distinction matters.

The primary objective is making the home more resistant to hurricane damage. Any reduction in insurance costs should be considered a potential additional benefit, not a guaranteed result.

Should you look into the program now?

If you own and occupy a Florida home that may meet the requirements, it is worth checking.

As of August 2026, My Safe Florida Home is accepting applications. Homeowners can create an account through the program’s Applicant Portal and complete the Prioritization Questionnaire to begin the process (My Safe Florida Home, 2026).

And if you complete mitigation improvements, remember to review the insurance side afterward.

At The Beacon Insurance Agency, we can help Florida homeowners understand their wind-mitigation information, review existing coverage, and determine whether newly documented improvements may qualify for available insurance discounts.

Making your home stronger before the next hurricane can provide valuable peace of mind. For homeowners who qualify, Florida may also help cover a significant portion of the cost.
